WHEELER, TEXAS -- The Texas Forest Service says today that four homes were lost and an estimated 20 homes damaged in an 11,000-acre fire near the Panhandle town of Wheeler, near the Texas-Oklahoma border.

Forest Service spokeswoman Jeanne Eastham says the fire is 25 percent contained.

Many of Wheeler's 1,300 residents were evacuated yesterday after the wildfire jumped the North Fork of the Red River, threatening the town, about 90 miles east of Amarillo. They were able to return home last night.

It's among several wildfires that erupted across Texas over the weekend.

A 2,170-acre wildfire in Jack County is about 65 percent contained today. More than a dozen households were evacuated last night, but were allowed to return home about midnight.

The winds and gusts of up to 35 mph are making it difficult to control the fires.

Officials say 24 firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation from fighting Texas wildfires.
