Procrastinators may need to file an extension with the IRS
AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The April 15th deadline is upon us, the dreaded time of year to file tax returns with the IRS. So what if you still haven't filed? You may need to file an extension.
"It would just depend on the tax return, if it's something simple, there is a possibility getting them out but basically this time of the year extensions about all they can do, with me anyhow, because it's just too late to try and stay up until midnight to get stuff out just because they were late getting it in," said Dennis Book, of Book Tax Service.
A lot of tax preparers won't take clients this close to the deadline, so don't delay and contact your tax preparer today if you haven't filed. Especially if you owe taxes, despite filing an extension the payment is due on the deadline date of April 15th, and at that point penalties and interest get tacked on.
"If they're that close to having the information ready they need to file an extension within the next couple of weeks, get it in and get it out, because like I say, they're going to be paying penalties and interest and the best way to stop that is get the return filed and get it in," said Book.
