AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The federal government is paying attention to people who stockpile guns and ammunition. The reason: a new report said the high volume of purchases and stockpiling could make right-wing extremist groups plan and train for violence against the U.S. government.
Homeland Security said membership in those groups could increase because of proposed gun restrictions, but one local shop owner says blaming everyday people won't cut it.
"The stockpiling is not really a bad deal, you know, the guys are just watching out for families and their sport, and for what they love to do in life as a hobby," said Jason Leochner, of Amarillo Pawn and Gun Manager. "They just want to blame somebody for something, so instead of working hard at the problem with guns, they want to blame other groups. Instead of fixing the real problem, they want to fix the blame."
The report did say there was no specific information that right-wing groups are currently planning acts of violence. This report, and one released in January about left-wing extremists, were both initiated during the Bush administration.
