Adult education starts Wednesday
No tests, no grades—just plenty of exciting learning opportunities when West Texas A&M University kicks off its Eternal Learning Series (ELS) April 20 at the Amarillo Center.
AMARILLO, TEXAS -- ELS is offered through WTAMU’s Office of Continuing Education for adult learners interested in challenging, innovative topics with stimulating and spirited discussions. Courses will be presented seminar style and designed to promote group discussion. A special kick-off event is planned for 3-5 p.m. Monday, April 20 at the Amarillo Center for a tour of the new downtown facility, along with an opportunity to register for ELS classes and meet fellow students. Refreshments will be served.
The first ELS course will be from 9-10:15 a.m. Wednesday, April 22. Dr. Byron Pearson, head of the WTAMU Department of History and Geography, will lead a course on history titled "Four Spicy Topics in American History: All Men are Created. . . Equal? (week one); The Care and Feeding of Patriotism (week two); Who, What, Where is the West . . . and Why is it Important? (week three); and Give Me Liberty, but Not Those Other Guys (week four)." The second class will follow from 10:30-11:45 a.m. with Dr. Diana Cox, a former faculty member at Amarillo College, teaching a class on "Memoir Writing: Personal Essay Non-Fiction." Each of the two seminar-style courses will meet Wednesday mornings for four weeks.
“We are very excited about our ELS classes,” Roxie Pranglin, assistant director of the Office of Continuing Education, said. “It’s a great opportunity to involve the community in the Amarillo Center and promotes lifelong learning for area retirees in a fun, exciting format. We have some wonderful topics, and our instructors are looking forward to working with community members.”
A variety of topics will be covered throughout the series. Class offerings will include politics, science, creative writing, the arts, geography, geology, computers, travel, communication and more.
The cost for ELS is $50 per seminar or $90 for both. For more information about ELS and course offerings, call Pranglin at 806-651-2037.
