As one of the original green concepts, gardening is becoming more and more popular

AMARILLO, TEXAS -- There is nothing quite like picking a plump juicy tomato, and if it comes out of your garden, there is definitely a sense of gratification. So, what veggies do well here in Amarillo? And how does gardening fit into the "green" movement.

"In my opinion vegetable gardening is one of the original green concepts, that goes way back before it was popular, is growing your own vegetable garden. Back in WWII everybody grew vegetables when there were shortages. Now it's just a good thing to help start growing your own. It's a fun hobby and you also get some benefit out of it, the vegetables are fresher and you know what you put on them," said Warren Reid, Reid's Coulter Gardens.

Reid said that tomatoes and peppers are the most popular, but Amarillo is great for cucumbers, melons, cantaloupe, beans, okra, and many other veggies.

The time to plant is coming soon as temperatures rise, but it's very important to prep the soil before planting. This means putting about 3 inches of organic compost on the soil, along with gypsum to loosen the soil. Go ahead and make your rows and when the time is right, you can plant.

"It's very gratifying to know that you grew that tomato or you grew that onion, so there is a lot of positives to growing your own veggies," said Reid.
