AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The March of Dimes annual fundraiser is Saturday in Amarillo, and organizers hope to beat their goal again this year.
Money raised for the foundation stays in the community, to help families have healthy babies.
One family that has been touched by the March of Dimes is this year's Ambassador family, The Salazars.
Lillea Salazar was born 11 weeks premature, and her parents credit the March of Dimes Foundation with helping them through the tough times.
"When Lillea was born her lungs were not ready to breathe on her own. She was administrated three rounds of serfactant and that particular drug helped to soften up her lungs where she could breathe on her own," said Lillea's mom, Leasa Salazar.
Lillea is now a healthy, active 2-year-old who is hitting every milestone she's supposed to hit, and the Salazar family owes it all to the March of Dimes.
"They've shown us how to, that we can do it and that we can do great things and that she can do great things, which is cool and neat to see that," said Leasa Salazar.
As the Ambassador family, Lillea will lead the March of Dimes March for Babies 2009 walk this Saturday at 10 a.m. at Thompson Park.
