CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) - Clovis Mayor Gayla Brumfield says she didn't know it was inappropriate to ask city officials to forward an e-mail invitation to a fundraiser she's holding for Democratic Lt. Gov. Diane Denish's run for governor.

Brumfield apologized yesterday and says it won't happen again.

The e-mail sent from the city manager's office invited city commissioners to Friday's fundraiser.

City Manager Joe Thomas says it violated a policy that bans city employees from political activity on the job.

Brumfield is not subject to the policy as an elected official.

Denish says it was an honest oversight.

The state Republican Party criticized the use of city resources for campaigning and called Brumfield's action inexcusable.
