DAYTON, Texas (AP) - A Liberty County couple is jailed Friday after the overnight shooting of three people, including two children, who were off-roading near Dayton.

Liberty County Chief Deputy Ken DeFoor says Gale and Sheila Muhs are both in Liberty County Jail today on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Sheriff's Cpl. Hugh Bishop says a sport-utility vehicle was climbing a levee about 9 p.m. Thursday when the owner of nearby land opened fire on the vehicles. He says a 30-year-old man and two children, a 5-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy, were critically wounded and airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. The children's 40-year-old father suffered minor injuries from shrapnel and refused treatment and drove himself to the hospital.

Bishop says the shooter reported believing the off-roading party was trespassing on his property.
