City of Amarillo's water conservation campaign kicked off
AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Summertime is here and that means water consumption almost doubles from off peak months, and that's why the city of Amarillo is kicking off their conservation campaign, "Every Drop Counts".
Tuesday city staff, presented facts, and various aspects of water consumption and conservation here in Amarillo.
The conservation of water is a top priority and city officials want people to make it a part of life.
"We wish to emphasize conservation as an ongoing attitude even if we have plenty of water supply, we don't have to use it all, and so we want to water right, we want to water wisely, and protect that resource because it is a finite resource and we want to make it last as long as possible," said Emmett Autrey, Director of Utilities for the City of Amarillo.
The main focus and new slogan is "water right", and really addresses how much water Amarillo uses in peak summer months for landscaping, irrigation, and landscaping. These types of water consumption double our water usage in the summer.
Some steps you can take to help conserve water: install low flush toilets, try to take shorter showers, and when it comes to outdoor usage, try to install rain-freeze sensors on sprinklers, so they shut off during rainy weather. Also, try to water in low wind situations, and try to water yards at night time.
Water conservation is something we all hear about, but city officials want to make sure the message stays on the minds of it's citizens.
"We're not talking about conservation because we're running out of water, we talk about conservation as a matter of stewardship for the future, we have children, grand children, and great grand children, who will be needing the water," said Autrey.
