SAN ANTONIO (AP) - The father of a 6-month-old child left unattended in a bathtub has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in the baby's 2007 death.

Marcelino Gil III was taken off life support in October 2007, days after his father said he left him in the tub while washing dishes.

Twenty-one-year-old Marcelino Gil, of San Antonio, was sentenced Monday. He had previously pleaded guilty to injury to a child by omission causing serious bodily injury.

He could have faced up to 20 years in prison, but prosecutors asked for up to 15 years as part of a plea deal, the San Antonio Express-News reported. Gil asked for probation.

Marcelino Gil suffered from attention deficit disorder and was often forgetful, according to letters family members sent asking for mercy.
