Senate may approve bill that would have you trade in your clunker for cash
AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Coupons for cars sounds like a scam.
But if your vehicle gets low gas mileage and meets other criteria, lawmakers are considering giving the public vouchers for cash to put toward new vehicles.
The House approved a bill Tuesday that would give either $3,500 or $4,500 toward a more fuel-efficient car.
It sounds great from a consumer's standpoint, and even car dealers like Pete's Car Smart Kia owner Pete Vaughn say it could stimulate the economy.
"I think it will help as far as getting people out buying cars. You know, two or three years ago they had a a similar deal for companies to buy and purchase trucks and company vehicles, and I think that helped a lot, too," Vaughn said.
Local Congressman Mac Thornberry voted against the bill, and told Pronews 7 it was because he was concerned that the bill had too many consequences.
"I want consumers to make decisions on what kind of car they want to buy, rather than make decisions on where the government subsidy is," Thornberry said. "That detracts from the market and has a number of consequences that are going to hurt a bunch of people just as it helped some."
