AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Imagine a commercial airliner full of teens crashing every week.
According to the Department of Public Safety, that same number of teens die every week in motor vehicle crashes.
So to combat that, DPS is reminding kids this week, to drive safe, don't drink, do drugs, or let distractions in the passenger seat with you.
Local DPS trooper Gabriel Medrano told ProNews 7 that although specific numbers are unavailable, many accidents in area are caused by distracted drivers.
"It's not illegal yet but we can see around here we've a had a few accidents that were a result of texting and of course, like I said, distracted driving is part of that cell phone use is the the number one reason that people are distracted in vehicles and 80% of all crashes are a result of distracted driving." said Medrano.
In 2008, there were more than 2,300 DUI citations given to minors across the state.
