Police and Fire Marshals claim more than 200 pounds
AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Now that the Fourth of July has come and gone, police are getting ready to destroy the fireworks that they collected from inside the city limits.
But it's not done like a show, the fireworks are separated from their packaging sorted and very carefully incinerated by Fire Marshals.
There is plenty to burn, Corporal Jerry Neufeld from the Amarillo Police Department said Police and Fire Marshals, picked up more than 200 pounds of fireworks.
"We issued probably 80 to 88 citations in the city," Neufeld said, "compared to the previous year of 50 to 52. So we definitely saw an increase in activity and saw a lot more calls."
Neufeld also said that if you have left-over fireworks that you would like to dispose of properly, you can call Crime Prevention at (806) 378-4257.
