We've highlighted a few new laws to keep you out of trouble
AMARILLO, TEXAS -- There are a few new laws that go into effect this September that could change the way people drive and talk on cell phones among other things.
One new law requires all passengers despite age or location in the vehicle to wear a seat belt.
Another law will not allow the use of a cell phone in a school zone unless you use a hands free device. Keep in mind each local city government will have to decide whether or not they will enforce this law and must place signs at both sides of the school zone warning drivers.
For drivers ed students, the number of behind-the-wheel instruction hours will increase from 14 to 34 hours.
Motorcycle riders will not be allowed to bring any child under the age of 5 with them on their bike unless they are placed into a side car.
"They're making these laws to what they feel like is the best thing, whether it's the best thing for the city of Amarillo or the Texas Panhandle even, or if it's a statewide problem, where we may not see it as a big problem here it may be a bigger problem in other areas, so they made it statewide. I think their intent is definitely trying to keep everybody as safe as they can," said Cpl. Jerry Nuefeld of the Amarillo Police Department.
