AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Underage driving is not only dangerous, it's also illegal. But just how big of a problem is it?
In 2008 in the state of Texas there were over 1300 accidents involving underage drivers. 284 of them caused serious injuries, and nine people died.
DPS Spokesman Trooper Gabriel Medrano say's it's too dangerous to let anyone under the age of 16 drive. He told ProNews 7, " They don't have the experience, and they don't have formal training behind the wheel that 16 year olds have with a drivers license and get at school."
Medrano says he doesn't know the exact number of underage fatal accidents for the Panhandle, but yesterday's accident that involved a driver who was only 14, and five people died, is one of several.
