CLOVIS, NEW MEXICO (AP) -- A longtime jail security expert is now the acting administrator over the Curry County Adult Detention Center.

Carlos Ortiz was hired over a month ago as the security chief. County Manager Lance Pyle has said Ortiz has impressive qualifications.

Ortiz said he can turn the troubled facility around in a month and having it running the way it should be.

Ortiz said he requires his upper-level officers to get out of their offices and walk the jail several times a day, observing and opening up the lines of communication with inmates and staff.

The facility has been plagued with escapes, mistaken releases and arrests of detention officers.

On Sept. 9, Pyle fired administrator Lois Bean for failing to make progress on ordered changes.
