Rep. Randy Neugebauer has announced he is having surgery for what he called "an early and very treatable stage of prostate cancer."

LUBBOCK, TEXAS (AP) -- The 59-year-old West Texas congressman said his prostate removal surgery is scheduled for Wednesday in the Washington area. He said he will remain in the hospital for a few days and then recuperate at and work from his Washington home until he is ready to return to Congress.

In a statement, said he expects the "impact on my work in Congress will be minimal" and that he will make a complete recovery.

Neugebauer, a Republican from Lubbock, said his cancer was discovered during an annual physical.

The four-term Congressman serves on the House Committees on Agriculture, Financial Services, and Science and Technology.
