(AP) -- AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas colleges are seeing a nine percent
jump in student enrollment compared to a year ago which some
officials say is due to the recession.
The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board reported this week
that fall enrollment has increased from last year's 1.26 million to
1.38 million. It's expected to be the largest one-year gain Texas
has seen, The Dallas Morning News reported Saturday.
Texas' two-year community colleges saw most of the growth. They
reported a 14 percent increase from last year and attributed much
of that to the country's economic woes.
The University of Texas at Arlington led the Dallas-Fort Worth
area, with 12 percent more students this year.
Private colleges reported a small gain overall of 2.4 percent.
Public four-year universities' enrollment jumped by 4.7 percent.
