(AP) -- AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Gov. Rick Perry has sent a letter to

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano urging the federal

government to stop its plans to transport illegal aliens from other

states into Texas solely for the purpose of deportation.

Perry sent the letter Saturday calling the proposed effort

"unnecessarily burdensome and costly to taxpayers." A statement

from Perry's office said the Alien Transfer and Exit Program is

scheduled to begin Sunday and would transport more than 34,000

illegal aliens per year through Presidio.

Calls and e-mails Saturday made by The Associated Press to the

secretary's office seeking comment weren't immediately returned.
