HEREFORD, TEXAS -- The city of Hereford is working to become a quieter city. Steps are being taken to enact a quite zone that would restrict where trains can blow their horns.
City Manager, Rick Hanna tells Pronews 7 that it's a long process. The city has to work with the Railroad Commission, BNSF Railroad, Texas Department of Transportation to get the legislation passed.
Hanna says about 100 trains roll through the city every day with horns blaring, and you can hear the jarring sound throughout the city.
Hanna also said safety assessments will have to be conducted at each crossing to increase the safety of motorists. He is hoping they can get raised medians, to prevent people from going around the crossing gates.
If everyone signs off on the proposed measures then the city can become a quiet zone.
Hanna said that if the city can get through all the bureaucracy they could have the ordinance in place by July of next year.
