(AP) -- LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) -The New Mexico State University Board of Regents has named a University of Nebraska chancellor the new president of NMSU.

The Regents announced Thursday that Barbara Couture would be NMSU's new president.

Couture is currently senior vice chancellor for academic affairs and a professor of English at Nebraska.

Couture earned a bachelor's degree with high distinction from the University of Michigan, where she also earned master and doctor of arts degrees in English language and literature.

During her interview for the post, Couture said she was aware the NMSU community is concerned about turnover and was looking for strong and stable leadership.

Couture is expected to start in Las Cruces on Jan. 1.
