AMARILLO, TEXAS -- A sewage main break kept City workers busy yesterday. A 16-inch diameter sewage force main broke at the intersection of Osage and 58th, causing approximately 500,000 gallons of sewage to spill out.
The City of Amarillo Utility Division treated and repaired the main. The Wastewater Collection department employees worked in accordance with Texas Commission on Environmental Quality requirements, in such a way that there is no threat to public health. No residences were damaged or threatened by the release.
Wastewater Collection department crews had the repairs completed by midnight.
A small amount of the sewage did reach Southeast Lake. City staff is sampling the lake and will address any issues that might need immediate action. Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) staff is also on hand to monitor the overall situation and ensure the public and environment is properly protected.
