Center City of Amarillo asked for your help today. It wanted feedback about a proposed downtown streetscape project. It's all part of the Statewide Transportation Enhancement Program.
TxDOT will take ideas and hand out up to two million dollars for the city with the best improvement idea. Amarillo's idea is to add curb appeal to downtown.
That means making Polk and Sixth streets more accessible by adding pedestrian walkways, benches, and trees. There are even plans for brick inlays at certain intersections, and even pocket parks.
Folks in the community say it will help bring life to downtown. "I've lived here all my life and i think it's the best thing we've ever done," said Jim Doche, who attended the meeting.
"If it was more bike friendly, and more pedestrian friendly, it would be easier to come downtown, um, it would bring businesses downtown, so it's kind of it, it would be a central gathering place," said Carli Herbert, who also attended the meeting, and is part-owner of the Ground Cafe.
Keep in mind, the city still has to be nominated for the program. Amarillo is scheduled to hand in its plans to TxDOT on December 11th.
