AMARILLO, TEXAS -- TIRZ Board members met today, in that meeting they approved $1.5 million to help spruce up downtown.

TxDOT is conducting a statewide Street Scape Project. Here's how it works cities from across the state submit their ideas on how they would make improvements. The city with the best idea will be awarded with $2 million to make those improvements. But here's the kicker the winning city has to match the $2 million.

The TIRZ board helped Center City and Downtown Amarillo Inc. come up with some of that money, today by approving the $1.5 million. But that leaves a $500,000 gap. Center City has already fronted $250,000. City Commissioners are expected to approve another $250,000 in their meeting next week.

Melissa Dailey of Downtown Amarillo Inc. said "the TxDOT plan would give us enough funds to make a significant impact of seven blocks of downtown, so that will allow us to make a big impact in addition to the cinergy that's already occuring with the globe news center and the development along polk street, and what the counties doing."

The city has until December 11th to present their plan.
