AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Texas education commissioner Robert Scott says the Obama administration is marching toward a federal takeover of the public school system -- and texas should fight the coercion.
This all centers on the federal plan called, "race to the top" ...basically, an effort to develop common english and math standards nationwide.
the U.S. department of education is backing up its plan with 4-billion dollars in grant money for schools which participate in the plan.
AISD superintendent rod schroder thinks the federal government is overstepping it's constitutional boundaries with this idea.
"But when they offer money, it gives them a pathway into controlling other entities, that are outside the bounds of the constitution."
He adds that he can see the federal plan being both very efficient and used as a way to compare both state to state results...but doesn't believe it's worth the price.
"That should be a state or local decision as opposed to a federal decision....and it would be easier with a federal system to do that...but at what cost?
Schroder says you lose the diversity you find in all local school districts if you buy into the nationwide standards being proposed.
