AMARILLO, TEXAS -- A House subcommittee has approved legislation aimed at forcing college football to switch to a playoff system to determine a national champion.

The bill would ban the promotion of a postseason NCAA Division I football game as a national championship unless that title contest is the result of a playoff.

Sponsor Representative Joe Barton of Texas (R), said the current Bowl Championship Series is unfair and won't change unless prompted by Congress.

But some lawmakers on the subcommittee said Congress has better things to do than legislating on college football.

West Texas A&M University professor of political science, posed that same question.

"Why Congress feels it needs to get involved? How Congress could get involved? If it's just a public relations ploy...it's a waste of time. Not that Congress has ever been known to waste time, but I'm at a loss as why this is at a level of congressional activity, when other things are much more important."
