Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry has ordered an independent study of the city's red light camera program.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- The study will look at crashes, citations, timing of yellow lights, fiscal data and the terms of the city's contract with Redflex, the company that provides the equipment for the traffic enforcement program.

The mayor's office says the cost of the study has yet to be determined. The city is negotiating with the University of New Mexico's Institute for Social Research to conduct the study.

Once the study is done, Berry will decide whether to keep the program, end it or narrow its scope.

Albuquerque has extended its contract with Redflex for four months to allow time for the study to be completed.
