AMARILLO, TEXAS -- All week on Pronews 7 we are taking a look back at the top headlines for the past ten years.
In the year 2001a lot happened locally but it was all overshadowed by September 11th.
In June, Dustin Camp made headlines while serving 10 years probation after being charged with manslaughter in the death of Brian Dehneke. Camp was arrested for underage drinking, and violating his probation, which landed him back in court, and slapped him with an 8 year prison sentence.
After a night of drinking at a hangout called "The Forest," 10 Dimmitt High students climbed in a friend's pickup and the driver being under the influence lost control of the pickup and crashed into a power pole, killing two of the passengers. The city later burned the forest in hopes of preventing more deaths.
Citing poor working conditions and lower wages than competing meat packing plants hundred of IBP workers walked out. After months of protesting and rallies the plant didn't budge. Workers were eventually told they wouldn't get their jobs back and those rehired would receive the same wages and serve a two month probationary period.
But all that pales in comparison to that morning in September, with a series of coordinated suicide attacks by 19 Al-Qaeda terrorists. They crashed two jets into the twin towers of the World Trade Center, the third into the Pentagon, and the fourth plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after some brave passengers and flight crew members attempted to re-take control of the plane.
