Victor Leal, an Amarillo businessman held a press conference to announce his intentions to run
AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The race for David Swinford's vacated seat on the House of Representatives is starting to heat up as candidates announce their intentions to run. Local Amarillo businessman, Victor Leal held a press conference Wednesday to officially announce his candidacy.
Leal is the former mayor of Muleshoe, and has recently served on the Texas Economic Development Corporation and Facilities Commission.
He admits his campaign will have to move fast with the primary quickly approaching.
"It's going to be a very fast sprint and we're prepared to work very very hard to knock on doors, whatever it takes to get our message out and to listen also to what the voters concerns are and to work hard for them to achieve results for them and that's what we're going to be doing," said Victor Leal.
As the filing deadline approaches more candidates are likely to enter the race on the Republican side which could create a highly contested primary.
"Whoever is in it, we're going to make it a positive campaign from our end, we're going to run a honorable and integral campaign, we're going to invite whoever runs in the race for a good clean match up and actually we're invigorated by it and I think it's good for the Republican party," said Leal.
Leal's campaign did receive an early boost as he received some key endorsements. Both Texas House Representative Warren Chisum and former U.S. Congressman Larry Combest have committed their support to Leal.
