CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) - Clovis police are discouraging travel on icy roads and high winds, and Cannon Air Force Base has told workers in nonessential jobs to stay home.

Police Chief Steve Sanders says it's like an ice-skating rink out on the streets.

Icy conditions combined with packed snow were causing travel difficulties throughout the Clovis area.

Sanders says people should stay home rather than come out and get stranded.

Clovis-area schools have been canceled and government offices are closed.
