AMARILLO,TEXAS -- One of the last remaining Pearl Harbor Survivors in this area passed away Monday morning. 87-year-old Garland Eslick was aboard the USS Oklahoma when it fell under attack in Pearl Harbor. Tasha Sims Garland's granddaughter said, "it was providence that he was in that part of the ship when the attack happened. Because his battle station was at the bottom of the ship, and it capsized. So when it turned over, he was on top. That was instrumental in saving him." Eslick never forgot how lucky he was to survive the attack. Eslick's wife and family gathered Monday night at St. Andrews church to remember and honor his life. He was described as the hero of the family.
The funeral is at eleven Wednesday morning. Boxwell Brothers will host family and friends from 5-7:00 Tuesday night.
