HOUMA, La. (AP) - A Texas judge has reduced the amount that a Houma oilfield-construction company must pay to the family of a Texas man crushed by a crane in 2008, from $11.1 million awarded by jurors to $10 million.

Attorney Robert Killeen Jr. of Houston says Houma-based Gulf Island Fabrication will appeal the ruling by Judge Joel Johnson of San Patricio County in the death of 50-year-old Adrian Flores.

Flores died April 29, 2008, while working near Ingleside, Texas, at a Gulf Island subsidiary called Gulf Marine Fabricators.

The family's attorney, Bill Tinning, says the company should have used more cranes than it did, and failed to devise an adequate "lift plan" addressing loads, positioning and work surfaces.
