The Amarillo United Citizens Forum, hosted the event
AMARILLO, TEXAS -- February is set aside to celebrate and honor African-American history. Monday, the Amarillo United Citizens Forum, hosted a movie night to help honor black history month.
Monday's screening was a documentary about Vivien Thomas, a famous African-American surgeon at Johns Hopkins. The documentary views the adversity and achievements of Thomas who is known for training many surgeons at Johns Hopkins.
"It's a good one to show people that it doesn't matter what the background is, they can become successful no matter what the adversity is," said Atoie Horton, Executive Director of the Amarillo United Citizens Forum.
Locally, this month's events culminates with a black history banquet. The banquet will feature a power point timeline from slavery to present day America. The event is scheduled for 6:30 PM on February 20th, at the Black Historical Cultural Center located at 901 N. Hayden in Amarillo.
