ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP) - Advanced water treatment research will be conducted at an Alamogordo facility under a $5 million agreement signed by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and New Mexico State University.
The agreement was signed Tuesday at the Brackish Groundwater National Desalination Research Facility, which opened in August 2007 to work on water treatment projects.
Several research programs are planned under the agreement, including using renewable energy in desalination.
Democratic U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman says the commitment to brackish ground water desalination technology will benefit communities worldwide that face water shortages.
Reclamation Commissioner Michael Connor says the partnership will seek environmentally sensitive, energy-efficient and cost-efficient ways to develop new water supplies.
The agreement also calls for education, allowing hands-on training at the desalinization facility for students working on water-related degrees.
