CLOVIS,N.M. -- The Curry County Adult Detention Center is now under the command of the Curry County Sheriff's Office. According to the Clovis News Journal, the Sheriff's Office took control early Sunday morning after an escape attempt by four inmates prompted the resignations of Interim Administrator Carlos Ortiz and several members of his command staff.
Just before 1 a.m. deputies and officers from the Clovis Police Department responded to assist with four out of control inmates who had attempted to escape. Undersheriff Wesley Waller said ten minutes later, the inmates were under control. Waller also said that when the four inmates attempted escape failed, they began trying to destroy property in the facility.
One of the four inmates injured in the escape attempt, was treated and released back to law enforcement. Waller said all four men - Guadalupe Urquizo, 29, Brandon Wagner, 24, Rico Sena, 22, and Michael Padilla, 26 - have been transferred to other facilities.
After the incident Waller said Ortiz and several members of his command staff resigned. The sheriff appointed Lt. Keith Bessette to serve as the temporary administrator until an administrator can be appointed.
Ortiz was one of seven applicants being considered for the administrator position that county officials had hoped to fill by April.
