DALLAS (AP) - A Texas man sentenced to 20 years for a fatal stabbing during a bar brawl is requesting a new trial after DNA tests showed blood on the murder weapon did not belong to the victim.
Danny Holloway is scheduled to appear in court in Lamar County on Thursday. He is asking a judge for a finding of innocence or a new trial, nearly eight years after he went to prison.
Lamar County and District Attorney Gary Young is opposing Holloway's efforts, saying he believes the 37-year-old is guilty.
Court records show that the bloody knife prosecutors say was used to kill a female bystander was tested last year and does not show a DNA profile matching the victim.
Holloway was convicted of manslaughter with a deadly weapon in 2002.
