Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott issued a strong warning about Chatroulette.com
AMARILLO, TEXAS -- An inappropriate chat room prompted the Texas Attorney General, Greg Abbott to issue a strong warning to parents and all online chatters. It stems from an investigation by his Cyber Crimes Unit, targeting Chatroulette.com.
The site lets random participants chat online using a web cam and a microphone, but according to the Cyber Crimes Unit, nearly half of the participants exposed themselves immediately and conducted sexually explicit acts on camera.
We recorded the Chatroulette.com site for roughly 10 minutes, to see how often inappropriate acts would take place. In those 10 minutes; 5 out of the 15 visitors we recorded performed sexually explicit acts.
It's something the Attorney General and prevention specialists want parents to be aware of.
"Just like any other website on the internet; they need to be monitoring what their kids are looking at. Also, to sit down with their child and have them show them some of the sites they look up on a regular basis, so they're aware of that," said Teresa Kenedy, A.I.S.D. Prevention Specialist.
Kenedy added that parents can ask cell phone providers and internet providers for parental controls, which can help prevent kids from being exposed to explicit material online,
