HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) - An Indiana man condemned for killing a San Antonio sheriff's officer as part of a month-long cross-country crime spree that also left another man slain is headed for the Texas death chamber.
Thirty-one-year-old Joshua Maxwell was convicted of the fatal shooting of Bexar County Sheriff's Sgt. Rudy Lopes, who was off duty when he was robbed and gunned down almost 10 years ago. His body was dumped behind a shopping mall, then Maxwell and a girlfriend fled to California where they were arrested in Lopes' stolen pickup following a police chase through downtown San Francisco.
Maxwell, set for execution Thursday evening, would be the fourth Texas prisoner executed this year. The U.S. Supreme Court last week refused to review his case.
