The popular primates should make a great attraction for the zoo
AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The Amarillo Zoo welcomed some new furry residents, zoo officials hosted a welcoming party for a family of lemurs that will be calling the zoo home.
The family of 3 ring tailed lemurs came from the Clovis Zoo where they have been breeding the animals. Amarillo has a set of twin females and one male.
Ring tailed lemurs are known for their vocal nature, their love for sun bathing, and get this stink fights; where among other things they flash their bushy tails at one another.
"Ring tailed lemurs are actually one of the most popular primates that you'll see at zoos, and so we knew it would be something people would really enjoy, plus a lot of kids they will talk about the movie "Madagascar" so they know these animals from that movie," said Rhonda Vontino, Zoo Curator.
There are 20 types of lemurs in the wild, which are all from Madagascar. Although their habitat and environment is in danger and the future of lemurs in Madagascar is uncertain; the lemurs here in Amarillo have a bright future ahead of them.
Zoo officials say it's important to add new attractions to keep the public's interest in the zoo.
"It keeps people interested in the zoo, to see changes and new things happening here. We like to keep it that way, keep people guessing and interested, so we try to add new species that they can come and enjoy," said Votino.
