AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Last year alone, Amarillo picked up more than 38,000 unwanted, escaped or homeless animals 15,000 more than the city of Austin.
Animal control officers say the main problem stems from irresponsible owners not spaying and neutering their pets, and with animal control picking up hundreds of animals a day on average, their shelter is stretched to the limit.
"We pick up about 250 pets a day, and I wouldn't say we are at capacity, but way too many animals are still in our shelter," according to Assistant Director of Animal Control, Shannon Barlow. "I've preached it for years and years. Spay and neuter your pets. If you spay and neuter, we reduce the unwanted pet population dramatically, then we have fewer to contend with."
And she adds with their adoptions, you get a healthy pet that's been spayed or neutered, received a clean bill of health and a transmitter chip in case it ever gets lost.
