SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - A Boston-based consumer and environmental group is calling on Gov. Bill Richardson to reduce state spending by ending the purchase of bottled water.
Corporate Accountability International says the state's online database of contracts shows New Mexico offices spent at least $78,000 in fiscal year 2009 on bottled water.
The advocacy group claims that spending taxpayer dollars on bottled water sends the wrong message about the safety of tap water. The group also argues that funds to repair and upgrade aging waters systems have declined.
The owner of Crystal Springs Bottle Water in Albuquerque, Jeff Vinyard, says he agrees with the group about problems with aging public-water systems. But he thinks going after independently owned companies like his is misguided and will end up hurt small businesses.
