AMARILLO,TEXAS -- The unemployment rate continues to drop nationwide while Amarillo continues to hold the top spot in the state.
Across the country, the national average is 9.7% which is still higher than the Texas state average of 8.2%.
The McAllen area is the highest in the state at almost 12% and Amarillo is the lowest at 5.7 down from a month ago.
Molly Barney with the Texas Workforce Commission says, "We've got the lowest unemployment in the state which typically where we stay and Amarillo employers are slowly but surely hiring more and more and with new industry coming to town, Amarillo is really in a good spot."
She added that the incentive program that offered employers $2,000 dollars to hire displaced workers is part of the reason Amarillo and the state are below the national average.
