LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Federal prosecutors say they've charged a 49-year-old West Texas jail inmate with trying to hire someone to kill the judge in his drug case.

The U.S. Attorney's Office release Friday said Jeffrey Dwayne Harrison tried to hire an undercover special agent of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to kill a state district judge.

Harrison's attorney, Patrick Howard, says his client was in the Brown County Jail in Brownwood on marijuana and controlled substance possession charges. It was unclear whether Harrison has an attorney on the federal charge.

The release states that state District Judge Stephen Ellis of Brownwood was the alleged target. Harrison was arrested on the federal charge at the jail Wednesday and is in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
