AMARILLO,TEXAS -- A carjacking suspect led police on a high speed chase through Amarillo Wednesday night before allegedly shooting himself.
Police have identified the suspect as a criminal with a long rap sheet from Lubbock.
Dyone Deshawn Johnson, 24, was wanted in Lubbock for a carjacking robbery that happened last week. He was also a suspect in several carjacking robberies, and suspected of shooting at a Lubbock police officer who tried to stop him in a stolen vehicle.
According to police Johnson made his way to Amarillo, where he is suspected of using a silver handgun to assault an Amarillo College employee while trying to take her car. Then around one Thursday morning police say he successfully carjacked a Chrysler from Jo Momma's on West 16th.
The stolen car was later spotted by police, who followed the suspect through town, south of the Canyon E-way. The chase came to an end when Johnson crashed into Ewing Irrigation on Canyon Drive, causing major damage to the car and business.
When officers approached the car police say Johnson was found in the drivers seat with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to the hospital where he died from his wound. His body has been sent to Lubbock for an autopsy. The Special Crimes Unit is actively investigating the incident.
