AMARILLO, TX -- We at ProNews 7 have reported on how dangerous distracted driving, like texting or even fussing with a child in the backseat can be dangerous, but today we found out just how dangerous it is.
In the past year there have been three wrecks that have left 11 people dead all due to distracted driving here in the panhandle.
Thursday we confirmed with DPS that distracted driving could have been a "possible contributing factor," in the the latest wreck which left a driver and her two kids dead.
ProNews 7 has learned the driver made a facebook post from her cell phone minutes before the crash.
DPS says accidents can unfold in a matter of milli-seconds, and if drivers are distracted, it can be as dangerous as drunk driving.
"Dialing while driving is of course the most dangerous thing you can do and of course dialing is the same thing just like texting because you gotta look down, you gotta be pushing those buttons in order to accomplish that task that you're trying to do," said Gabriel Medrano, the DPS Public Information Officer.
Medrano continued giving us some tips, saying that turning off your ringer while driving will help you be less distracted.
If you must take that call, pull over and then answer it.
