Suspect believed to be in custody
AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Pronews 7 has received many call this morning about the police presence in the 34th and Western area, we have just received this press release from the Amarillo Police Department. We have crews on the scene, check back later for more details.
UPDATE: ***APD received a call about the possible location of the suspect in the area of the crime scene. A man was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound. APD is still looking for the female.
UPDATE: Continued...event around 34/Hobbs...some streets remained closed. Officers are still in the area searching for the suspects. There is no additional description available at this time. Be aware that streets in the area including 34th from Western to Janet and Hobbs from 33rd to 34th remain closed. Western Street IS open for regular traffic.
Be aware that both uniformed and plainclothes officers will be in the area, continuing to search for the suspects and evidence, and that the public should be aware that the suspects may still be in the area.
At 6:55 AM, officers watching a vehicle they believed a person was trying to steal attempted to stop a vehicle in the area of 34th and Hobbs. At some point, the suspect vehicle struck a marked patrol vehicle. At some point, an officer fired one or more shots which struck the suspect vehicle. It is unknown if the suspect is armed or was injured in the incident. The Hispanic male suspect was wearing a black ball cap and and a white "big" shirt and fled westbound on foot from 33rd and Hobbs. There was a second person in the car that also ran from the scene. She is a white female with a white ball cap. She possibly had strawberry blond hair in a pony tail that was pulled through the cap. She may have been wearing a red shirt. She ran east through the area of some apartments at 34th and Janet. Officers have cordoned off the area around 34th, Mockingbird St., Olsen, and Western Streets. Both uniformed and plainclothes officers are on foot in the area searching for the suspect. The DPS helicopter is assisting. The APD is asking citizens to be aware of the suspects on foot in the area and to notify us immediately by using 911 if either one is seen. Also be aware that officers, both in uniformed and in plain clothes will be on foot in the area. If possible, avoid travel through the area.
