City of Canyon denied the request by Buffalo Southwest Cafe for late night alcohol service
AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Canyon City commissioners were presented with a request from Buffalo Southwest Cafe, but the issue died before the debate was really considered.
The request was made to essentially give Buffalo Southwest Cafe an extra hour of service primarily to accommodate crowds leaving the play "Texas" during the summertime.
The owner and restaurant staff tried to convince commissioners they could pass a local ordinance to allow the extra hours of service. That's where the request died. Based on Canyon's city attorney's interpretation of the alcoholic beverage code, commissioners could not pass such an ordinance.
"Our city attorney gave his opinion that those late hours typically apply to wet areas not dry areas, which Canyon is a dry precinct. It was his opinion that they don't actually have the authority to adopt late hour ordinances anyway, so the item was denied," said Randy Criswell, Canyon City Manager.
During the meeting, Canyon's police chief made his preference clear. Even if they could pass the ordinance he did not want to see that happen. He presented statistics with increases in alcohol offenses, and stated they would not be capable of dealing with alcohol use until 2 A.M. with his current police force.
