First ever Dust Bowl Symposium will take place at Draper's Farm Headquarters outside of Guymon
AMARILLO, TEXAS -- This year is the 75th anniversary of Black Sunday, the worst dust storm our country has ever experienced. The area between Dalhart and Guymon was near the epicenter of that massive storm. This weekend, the first ever Dust Bowl Symposium will take place at the Draper's Farm Headquarters near Guymon.
Survivors will share experiences and stories, while experts will look into and discuss the causes and effects of this historical event.
"When people think of the Dust Bowl they think of it just as a natural disaster, and it was, but some of the policies of the day, farming policies helped cause that Dust Bowl," said Jess Nelson, Dust Bowl Symposium Committee.
Friday, folks in Guymon watched the documentary "The Plow that Broke the Plains" and the film "The Grapes of Wrath" at the Northridge Cinema as a part of this weekend's symposium.
