AMARILLO, TX -- As part of Global Youth Service Day, on Saturday, April 27, 2010, the Travis Middle School Green Team, rolled up their sleeves and went to school on a Saturday.
About 30 students, from 6th graders to 8th graders, are paying it forward, and have adopted seven houses near the school to landscape with plants that are adaptable, meaning they need very little water.
They plan on taking care of the more than 170 plants throughout the year.
It's all part of the service learning project, which involves residents, teachers, and student, and a grant from State Farm that made it possible.
"The main thing I hope they take from doing these types of projects is, um, how easy recycling is, you know taking responsibility for this generation. As far as with the plants, just making a conscious decision to choose what would best fir in our area with the amount of water that we have," said Michaela Dodson, the 7th Grade Science teacher.
The Green Team recently won the volunteer of the year award from AISD at the Partners in Education Banquet.
