HOUSTON (AP) - The Houston school board has added its big voice to those opposing the state's proposed social studies standards.

Trustees overseeing the largest school district in Texas asked the State Board of Education on Thursday to pass curriculum standards for social studies that are "rigorous, balanced and manageable," the Houston Chronicle reports Friday.

As the standards head for final approval next month more than 1,200 historians and professors are pushing for a delay as are members of the Legislature's black and Mexican-American caucuses.

Critics say the process was tainted. A far-right faction of the state board injected conservative ideals into social studies, history and economics lessons.

The standards will guide textbook purchases and classroom instruction over the next decade.
